Abstract : Socio-economic empowerment is central to achieving gender equity and sustainable development. West Bengal has undertaken multiple educational and welfare initiatives to uplift women’s status. This study explores the role of education, government programmes, and social transformation in advancing women’s empowerment in the state. A qualitative approach based on thematic analysis of secondary sources—such as policy documents, reports, and scholarly works—has been employed. Findings reveal that rising female literacy, participation in Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and schemes like Kanyashree and Anandadhara have positively influenced women’s socio-economic conditions. However, persistent challenges such as poverty, gender bias, and limited employment opportunities remain. The study highlights the need for strengthened educational access, financial inclusion, and awareness initiatives to ensure sustainable empowerment.
